A home of therapeutic and spiritual healing

Karl is a  Certified Massage Therapist (CMT) through the California Massage Therapy Council. CAMTC #41940 He has completed all required educational hours to qualify as a Certified Massage Therapist, and has thousands of hours of hands on experience in practice.

Before starting a career in massage therapy, Karl received a Bachelor’s degree in International Business from the University of San Francisco. He previously worked in corporate America, where he struggled to find a place that matched his values and integrity in all aspects of his work.

After many years and a relocation to Southern California, massage found Karl. He enrolled at a small school named The Academy of Holistic Health Arts, where he thrived and found his true calling in massage and therapeutic practices. Karl is passionate about bringing massage to all people, each with unique needs. After graduating from the Academy of Holistic Health Arts in 2013, Karl went on to work in the spa industry, and since then, has begun his own private practice, now known as Polynesian Touch Therapy.

Since graduating in 2013, Karl has immersed himself in the field of Massage Therapy quickly finding his deep passion for the holistic healing benefits massage therapy provides. In his courses, he learned various body work techniques (known as modalities) such as Deep Tissue, Hot Stone, and Reflexology, all of which he has incorporated into his daily therapeutic practices. In addition to these modalities he has incorporated Swedish, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, and Myofascial techniques, as well as Cupping and Trigger Point therapies to customuize the individual therapeutic needs of his clients.

Providing the powers of holistic healing for others is a deep passion for Karl and he dedicates himself fully to the power of bodywork. Through first-hand experience, he understands the life changing effects it provides on so many levels and has found it to be deeply rewarding to offer the same service he received to his clients. Through previous leadership roles in the therapeutic massage world, Karl understands the importance of communicator and empathy, always striveing to uphold the highest standards of discretion and professionalism.

Karl is especially intrigued by indigenous styles of massage that originate from all regions of the world. Specifically, he studies and practices a lineage modality of therapeutic massage known as “Fofo”. Karl first learned of Fofo when it was passed on to him by his great grandmother, a native Tuvaluan.  In drawing from this lineage practice, as well as the other ancient practices of our ancestors throughout the world, Karl believes that we can become united in growth through the healing practices of massage and energy therapy, and in turn, lead us to “Be the change that we wish to see in the world.” (Mahatma Gandhi)

You may read more about the practice of Fofo below.

It is Karl's hope that he can positively and forever better the health, wellbeing and holistic wellness of each and every one of his clients.

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of deep-tissue massage and alternative medicine, with roots in Chinese, Egyptian and other Middle Eastern cultures.  During this treatment, the therapist puts special cups on the client’s skin to create suction in order to ease pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and well-being. The suction and negative pressure provided by cupping can loosen muscles, encourage blood flow, and sedate the nervous system.

Choose from 60, 90 or 120 minute sessions.

Combining the benefits of Massage and Cupping in one session, get the best of both therapeutic treatments with this service.

Choose from 60, 90 or 120 minute sessions.

Reiki is a form of alternative medicine called energy healing. When performing a Reiki session, Reiki practitioners use a technique called “palm healing”. Through the palms, a "universal energy" is transferred through the hands and touch of the practitioner to the patient, to encourage emotional and physical healing.

Reiki is available as an individual session, and as three levels of Classes. To read more about Reiki and the classes available through Polynesian Touch Therapy, please see the Reiki subsection listed in the “Workshops and Classes” section below.

This is a lineage modality of massage that has been passed down for generations.

Utilizing the greater degrees of pressure and their body weight, the performing therapist slowly rocks, steps and presses on the receiving client's back in the desired areas. As taught to him by his family, Karl moves the body and steps his feet in the exact same way that Fofō has been performed in Tuvaluan and Samoan history to treat his clients needs.

Fofō is also available as a workshop with Polynesian Touch Therapy. To read more about this service, please see the Fofō subsection under the "Workshops and Classes" section below.

"Family Fofō" is a lineage modality of massage that has been passed down for generations through Karl's family. The word "Fofō" is loosely translated as massage in Samoan and Tuvaluan. Fofō is a traditional way to treat the unique therapeutic needs of every person.

Karl's Great Grandmother, Mary Jane Johnston Betham (pictured) immigrated from the island nation of Tuvalu (formally known as Ellice Islands) to Samoa to marry into the Betham family. Mary Jane kept her family legacy alive by passing on the Fofō skills she learned as a young girl to her grandchildren, Terri Rotter and Hector Reid.  As a family practice, Fofō had been used in Mary Jane's family and across the nation of Tuvalu and Samoa for generations to relieve pain, stress, muscle tension, and for over all well-being. In passing her legacy to Terri Rotter and Hector Reid, who in turn educated Karl, Fofō's healing benefits and ancient art have been revitalized and incorporated into the modern world through Polynesian Touch Therapy.

Family Fofō is performed while the receiving client is fully clothed and laying on the floor or a mat.  It is slow and meditative. The performing therapist listens to the flow of the receiving client’s breath to create and ebb and flow like rhythm as the massage begins. The performing Therapist stands while giving this type of massage, and uses their feet instead of the hands. In using the feet, the performing therapist has a greater control over their body weight and the resulting pressure and gravity applied to the receiving client.

Utilizing the greater degrees of pressure and their body weight, the performing therapist slowly walks, steps and presses on the receiving client's back in the desired areas. As taught to him by his family, Karl moves the body and steps his feet in the exact same way that Fofō has been performed in Tuvaluan and Samoan history to treat his clients needs.

Family Fofō is available as a workshop with Polynesian Touch Therapy. To participate in a Fofō workshop, please contact Polynesian Touch Therapy directly using the "Contact" form below. Do NOT use the "Book Now" form below.
